The Roxy Project

I am almost at the end of my 4th year honors degree at QMU in Edinburgh. Part of my directing specialism is to create/work on a piece of theatre for performance. I chose to explore Vulnerability as a concept, and use this as a starting point for the performers, musician and writer who are all collaborating on this project with me. The brief was simple, create a 30 min piece of theatre that will run for three days at The Roxy Art House, Edinburgh.
Collaborating on this project are Leanne Foxwell, a 2nd year DTA student at QMU and Craig Mcewan an actor currently undertaking a course at RSAMD. They will both be performing at The Roxy and so far their input has been valuable. Alan Gordon, a graduate of QMU and currently in the BBC finals for new writing is scripting the piece based on the rehearsal process and Jim Harbourne, another QMU graduate who is an exquisite musician and composer is creating an original score for the piece. As director/project co-ordinator my job is to encourage, support and push the process along by creating rehearsal schedules to work with and documenting the process, which is then in turn handed over to Alan, where he creates scenes/moments for the actors to explore in the following rehearsals

To date there has been 3 rehearsals and with 2 weeks to go, the process is moving along nicely. I was slightly nervous about creating this work as my usual comfort zone, theatrically, is text based. The idea of using one word as a starting point was initially a daunting prospect, but as the idea and the process developed and altered over the past few months, the idea of starting to create a unique and original piece of theatre became more encapsulating.I hope that the piece is a success and that the creative team attached to the project enjoy the experience. I am pleased to be working with them all and i hope that i have the privilege of working with them all again one day.
